'Sir' seems to confer a greater amount of respect than simply calling him 'Mr. Rumsfeld,' unless you say it like a cop who has stopped you for speeding. (Jon didn't say it that way.) And, as I mentioned, Stewart doesn't say 'sir' to all of his older male guests, so it seemed to be a special title. Of course, if Paul McCartney ever turns up on his show, he can call him 'Sir' all he wants -- he's actually been knighted by QE2. (The Queen of England, not the luxury liner. ;)

So we can ask Jon Stewart about his "sir" level? what does one have to do or have been to rank a sir?

I'd suspect the book plug is part of the deal to get the guest on the program. Though with Borders now gone, it might take a little longer to find it on the 90% off discount table. I'll wait for the $1.00 library sale.

db, what you say is true, and I think parts of the Rummy interview Stewart handled well, but the three things that irritated me were Stewart calling him 'sir' more than once (he doesn't do that with every guest, and war criminal Rumsfeld doesn't deserve the respect); that he let Rummy slip through a few whoppers without challenge, and, finally, that he helped sell the monster's book.

I guess a fourth would be that young people who depend on TDS as a news source might get the impression that Rummy's not all that bad, just a misunderstood, ill-informed old coot. They don't remember the Bush years, and how much Dandy Don had to do with pushing the illegal Iraq War, lying about it once it started, and suborning multiple violations of the Constitution, including torture. The guy should be in jail instead of doing chatty interviews on TV.

Ouch!

On one hand Stewart has to be relatively nice to his guests or no one controvercial will appear on his show.

On the other hand there used to be a reason why Stewart would win polls about the nation's most trusted news source. & it wasn't for playing nice when guests are weaseling (if that's a word)
