I've been told that a distant relative, Henry Janes, founded the town of Janesville, Wisc. (I'm not surprised that he was later run of there on a rail either, knowing some of my relatives.) I've never been to Janesville, but recently I read that while most Wisconsin cities are comparatively progressive, especially the state capital of Madison, Janesville is a backwater of angry white reactionary bigots, desperately trying to cling to some semblance of '50s segregation and a Tea Party hotbed. Of course, this is where some out-of-state pollster went to get the views of 'average' Wisconsinites on the union protests in Madison. I don't recall if the pollster was Rasmussen, but it seconds your point about towns, even those in close proxmity -- Janesville is about a 40-minute drive from Madison -- being completely different from one another even if planted in nearly the same soil.
