		<description><![CDATA[My friends who are or were public school teachers tell me that things pretty much went to hell when the states cut music and art programs to save money and everything became &#039;teach to the test.&#039; Music and art stimulate the brain in spontaneous ways and cause kids to ask questions and develop interests which then lead them to want to read and think. And, yes, music does help math understanding. Adults, if subjected to the daily grind of &#039;teach to the test,&#039; would be bored out of their wits; for some mysterious reason they don&#039;t think their children are. This is as fatuous as believing sticking kids in uniforms will help improve discipline and learning; when I was young, I knew several kids who wore uniforms to attend Catholic parochial schools -- it didn&#039;t work.]]></description>
