When Windows was first released, Marc publicly (and rightly) identified it as a programmer-hostile environment. The pretty pictures and bright colors, while ostensibly a nice menu system for the end user, was the first step in making it more difficult for applications designers.

At the time, that was part of Perkel’s business – designing applications and utilities that gave more power to the end user. He also made a point of sharing information instead of hiding it. This, and his outspoken behavior, red-flagged him as an individual who would be unlikely to encourage the people who bought computers and systems from him, to buy Windows 3.1 – so they blacklisted him.

At least, that’s my theory. But you can still find Marc’s comments about early Windows versions on his website if you try. I think everything he’s ever written can be found somewhere on http://www.perkel.com.
