At this point, Junior and Dick are so loathed — not just by the majority of the public, but by large numbers of the military — that I doubt they could pull it off.

Even using our money to pay off Blackwater-style mercenaries to crack down, there simply aren’t enough private mercenaries (yet) to enforce a Musharraf tyranny here.

Besides, why bother to crack down when you already have the Big Media, the Supreme Court, and the opposition party in your back pocket?

Bush and Cheney already know they won’t be impeached no matter what they do, and the only thing standing between them and attacking Iran is not Congress, but the Pentagon. (Of course, they may not even really want to attack Iran, but simply give the GOP a war-terror issue for 2008 — fear-mongering is all they have left.)

Sadly, it really wouldn’t surprise me if Bush pulled the same stunt. He has shown us time and again that he doesn’t care what our laws and Constitution say, and this would give him a chance to be rid of both.
