Thanks, Greg. One thing I forgot to mention is that Afghanistan is really not a nation at all, but a collection of tribes of which I read the Pashtuns in the north are the largest.

Like the Russians, we concentrated on securing Kabul, the capital city, thinking that would convince the rest of the tribes to respect the authority of the central government we installed under Hamid Karzai and fight for it. This is precisely what the Russians did, using different puppets, and we know how well that turned out.

To drag out that well-worn George Santayana quote: <em>"Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it."</em>

Unfortunately, Obama has drunk the Pentagon's Cold War Kool-Aid and, like the Jonestown mix, it's lethal.

Excellent post RS! Anyone with knowledge and reality-based thinking knows that this war is about economics, energy and the pipeline. Our troops will be there until the Afghans decide they want to protect the interests of US multi-national corporations, and that will never happen. Get ready for a long stay in Afghanistan, unless of course we get our asses kicked out like we did in Vietnam.
