EVANGELICALS Lobbying for Armageddon
Sunday, May 18, 2008 – By: Posner, SarahSome influential evangelical leaders are lobbying for an attack on Iran. But it’s not about geopolitics — it’s about bringing about the End Times.   In a perfect world, a reporter at last week’s press conference with George Bush and Tony Blair would have asked Bush, in the presence of his principal European ally, if he believes the European Union is the Antichrist.

Although it sounds like the kind of Pat Robertson lunacy that makes even the wingnuts run for the nearest exit, it’s a question Bush should be forced to answer. Bush and other leading Republicans have lined up behind a growing movement of Christian Zionists for whom an European Antichrist figures prominently in an end-times scenario. So they should be forced to explain to the rest of us why they’re courting the votes of people who believe our allies are evil incarnate. Could it be that the central requirement for their breathlessly anticipated Armageddon — that the United States confront Iran — happens to dovetail so nicely with the neoconservative war agenda?

Is Wright About To Get Even?

Does Jeremiah Wright Have a Book Coming Out in October?

Could this really be true? I noticed this sentence buried in today’s Washington Times:

The Obama problem continues to be the blabbermouth preacher who isn’t likely to go away. He even has a book coming in October.

Assuming Obama makes it to the general election, this could possibly be the best gift that McCain could have asked for. A October release would obviously be timed to inflict maximum damage on Obama. Given that Wright thinks that Obama betrayed him for political purposes, you have to wonder if the Reverend will include any previously unknown “shocking revelations” about Obama. I’m surprised I haven’t seen anyone else pick up on this.

Obama starts ‘TOP SECRET’ search for running mate

By NEDRA PICKLER

Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON (AP) – Democratic officials say Barack Obama has begun a top-secret search for a running mate.

Democratic officials said Thursday the party’s likely nominee has asked former Fannie Mae CEO Jim Johnson to begin vetting potential vice presidential picks. Johnson did the same job for Democratic nominees John Kerry in 2004 and Walter Mondale in 1984.

The Democratic officials spoke on a condition of anonymity about a process that the campaign wants to keep quiet.

Vice presidential searches are usually closely held secrets, but Obama campaign officials say the effort is being handled by a particularly tight circle of advisers.

The campaign also does not want to discuss the effort because they are still engaged in a fading primary campaign against Hillary Rodham Clinton.   http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/feedarticle/7533986

McCain’s one good idea to make a president accountable

Looking at the campaign of Senator John McCain I can only hope for one thing, utter failure. I say this because I believe a McCain presidency would finish the destruction of American that our current president started. However, a few weeks back McCain floated an idea of what he might do as president. McCain said that he would periodically go to the Congress and engage our legislative branch much the same way a British Prime Minister goes to the House of Commons to engage it. Brilliant!

McCain’s idea is brilliant because it would once and for all end the idea that the President of the United States is above all else. George W. Bush is probably the worst offender of a president that believes that presidential power is superior to the other branches of government. Bush talks to no one. Over his almost eight years Bush has engaged Congress and the press less than most presidents do in half a term. Bush feels accountable to no one. That is the problem.

A president is nothing more than an elected official, an elected official that is elected by we the people. He or she may be the highest elected official in the land but they are just people elected to do a job. In an effort to bring the president down to earth and make the office more accountable to the people the president should make a monthly visit to Congress. To make this all the more visible this monthly visit in some form should be broadcast on television on a main network (not CSPAN).

With constant contact between branches, and the nation watching, we could truly see the idea of bi-partisanship emerge. If bi-partisanship doesn’t manifest itself in this environment, neither side can accuse the other of not communicating because, after all, they would be meeting once a month.  Add to that network television coverage and you just might force our politicians to govern in the best interest of us.

I Defy You to Prove That!

Hospital Attempts Deportation of Woman With Inadequate Insurance

 May 19, 2008.

An immigrant women from Honduras – with legal documentation – faces deportation because her insurance does not cover long-term care.

An immigrant woman from Honduras who has very recently awakened from a coma is being threatened with what can effectively be called deportation, because she does not have the insurance needed to cover her medical bills. (Don’t read the comments in these articles unless you want to lose your lunch.) But here is the real kicker: while it would be repulsive and incredibly inhumane to deport an uninsured/under-insured person with a serious medical condition because of their undocumented status, despite the lack of adequate facilities for their care in their nations of citizenship, it isn’t even the case here. Sonia del Cid Iscoa has a current visa and in the U.S. legally. (All emphasis in quoted text is mine.)

A gravely ill woman at risk of being removed from the country for lack of adequate insurance coverage awoke from a coma Tuesday.

The hospital has been seeking to return her to her native Honduras; her family took the hospital to court.

Iscoa, 34, has a valid visa and has lived in the United States for more than 17 years. She has no family in Honduras.

But St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center sought to have her sent to Honduras when she went into a coma April 20 after giving birth to a daughter about 8 weeks premature.
