broken arm, broken healthcare system

this report is gonna be short because i have to type it all with only one hand. hunt and peck. no capitalizations. that’s what happens when one breaks one’s arm.

and another thing that happens when one breaks one’s arm is that, after i had tripped and fallen over a piece of uplifted sidewalk in berkeley and got rushed to the hospital in a fire truck, i also quickly discovered how much our healthcare system has been looted and plundered by healthcare insurance company executives trying to score yet another million-dollar paycheck — at the expense of our hospitals, us patients and our hard-working doctors and nurses.

it took forever for me to get seen and treated.

ouch!

the doctors and nurses and technicians at my hospital were all angels of mercy and friendly and skilled and kind. but there were only a few of them and only so much they could do in the time allotted to each patient — they could only spread themselves so thin.

“and how do you feel about working for sutter health, that big conglomerate that has taken over your hospital?” i asked all of them http://www.sutterhealth.org/

“sutter health? i hate sutter health!” they all replied. hey, me too. and every single employee that i talked to said the same thing. and they didn’t just hate sutter health. they really really really hated sutter health. must be strange to have 100% of your employees hate you so much.

“there should be a law that says that when the salaries of executives of non-profit corporations reach over one million dollars a year, then that company’s non-profit status should be revoked.”

sutter’s greed is slowly eating our local hospital alive.

i would type more on this subject but gotta go take my pain medication and then try to figure out how i’m going to take a bath and drive a stick shift with only one arm. sigh. my total sympathy goes out to anyone who has ever permanently lost the use of an arm, a hand, a leg or any other appendage. don’t see how they can do it.

ps: between the heath insurance lobby, the nuclear-waste-creation lobby, the pharmaceutical lobby, the oil lobby, the coal lobby, the nra lobby, the bankster lobby, the gmo/agribusiness lobby, the war profiteer lobby, the tobacco lobby, the anti-regulations lobby, the aipac lobby, the pro-pollution lobby, the anti-education lobby, the offshore tax haven lobby, the anti-social-security lobby, the cia lobby, the hedge-fund lobby, the deforestation lobby, the anti-union lobby, the sell-off-our-post-offices lobby, the media-monopoly lobby, the food additive lobby, the strip-mining lobby, the keystone pipeline lobby, the pesticide lobby, the fracking lobby, etc., it’s a wonder that any of the rest of us americans are even still alive and functioning at all — and still even have all our arms and legs too.

Be very afraid: What happens when the other bad guys get drones too?

OMG! What if American neo-cons aren’t the only imperialist bastards to start developing and using drones! What if some other imperial bastard bad guys also start using drones too? Or Goldfinger or the NSA or the phone company gets them? Then, obviously, what would happen next is that wedding parties in Oregon and Ohio and women and children in New Hampshire and New Mexico will also have to keep their eyes on the skies 24/7 too — just like they now do in Pakistan and Palestine!

And when (not if) this happens, we can realistically expect to see a whole new 9-11-style fear-and-loathing scenario being played out every day on every quiet, peaceful suburban street in America.

Yes, thanks to drones, war might easily be coming to America soon — just like the Pentagon has already generously brought war to the doorstep of almost every other country on the planet.

When the American neo-con military-industrial complex began developing and using drones, it obviously opened a whole new can of worms. And are we any safer now because of these drones? NOT. What goes around comes around. Thanks a lot, War Street.

“But, Jane,” you might say, “you’re acting just like Chicken Little here. No one else is gonna be able to develop drones — or be able to use them either.” Hey, why not? Drones are basically model airplanes with payloads. How hard can it be to develop one of those? All that the other bad guys have to do is just infiltrate some model-airplane rally in Ohio — and it’s Goodnight Cincinnati.
Someone just informed me that Monsanto is currently also developing drones. Dare to plant some heirloom tomatoes in your back yard and you’re toast! “Step away from the tomatoes!” That is, if you get any warning at all.

And I also just learned that in Afghanistan the Taliban are now able to bring American imperial bad guys’ drones under radio control and then use them to strike back. What if DuPont seized Monsanto’s drones? Or the Mafia seized control of your friendly local police department’s drones? Or psychopathic child-stalkers in Florida got their hands on one. Or if they started having drone wars on “Big Brother” or “Survivor”? Or what if those mean girls at your old high school got “droned” by the science nerds. Fox News could use them to knock off us liberals. Scouting could even offer a “I built a drone!” merit badge. And I bet that those same National Rifle Association marketing executives who brought us Sandy Hook and Stand Your Ground would just be creaming their jeans at the thought of selling every household on every block in America its very own drone.

The possibilities for death from the skies are endless here. And you don’t even need to have access to yellow-cake or reactors or cyclotrons to kill people either!

Be very afraid.

PS: The National Security Agency should also start being very afraid too — but for a different reason. If the NSA truly is listening in on all of our phone conversations and reading all of our FB pages and e-mails, then it must surely know for certain what billions of people all over the world are currently saying about their outrageous spying operations — and not one of these billions are hitting the “Like” button either.

It must be really scary for the NSA to eavesdrop on so many of the world’s party lines — only to discover that everyone who is anyone is talking trash about THEM http://www.truth-out.org/buzzflash/commentary/item/18094-richest-300-persons-on-earth-have-more-money-than-poorest-3-billion.

PPS: And speaking of national security, I just went to see The Lone Ranger — and loved it. It seems that the Lone Ranger and Tonto were actually keeping the Old West safe from corporate corruption! http://www.smirkingchimp.com/thread/bob-patterson/50444/dalton-trumbo-rides-again So where are they now when we really need them?

Then I went to see “World War Z,” a biology-gone-wild thriller that you just gotta love http://www.worldwarzmovie.com/# But then on the way home, I tripped on a broken sidewalk, broke my arm and ended up in an ambulance on the way to the hospital, giving a whole new meaning to the term, “blockbuster”.

And another summer blockbuster that I’m all excited to see is “Elysium,” with Matt Damon and Jodie Foster. “In the year 2154, two classes of people exist: the very wealthy, who live on a pristine man-made space station called Elysium, and the rest, who live on an overpopulated, ruined planet.” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hvGE2nP4ga8 This is the logical extension of what is currently happening on our corporatized planet — except that in Elysium in 2154, the American imperialist bastards of the future have even awesomely hotter-looking robots and drones than they do now.

Birth control and abortion: A man’s right to choose!

I recently saw a cartoon of a man walking out of an X-rated video store — only to be confronted by an irate bunch of women picketing him and screaming, “Masturbation is murder!” and “Life begins at erection!” Truly hilarious. But perhaps a lot of people who saw this cartoon missed its main point. Ironic sarcasm? Sure. But also by its shear absurdity, the cartoon made it clear that an American man’s reproductive decisions are his and his alone — and that a woman’s reproductive decisions are mostly his too.

I think that we’ve all seen photos of grinning federal, state and local lawmakers who have just voted in favor of making various birth-control and anti-abortion laws mandatory for all women. And most of the people in these photos are men.

So maybe it’s time to turn the tables here and take away a man’s right to choose too.

The possibilities are endless.

Suppose, for instance, that some man wants drink a few six-packs on a Saturday night and make drunk-dialing booty calls? Nope. His state’s legislature has just made that illegal. No more right-to-choose for you!

Or let’s say that you and your wife have decided to have children. Maybe one or two? Not gonna happen. Laws have been passed. No condoms or vasectomies for you either. You must now have ten kids and change all their diapers and pay child support for all of them too — whether you want to or not. Screw right-to-choose for men. http://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/an-appellate-courts-dangerous-precedent-on-contraception/2013/07/12/7cbe629a-e35a-11e2-aef3-339619eab080_story.html

You wanna play around at the office Christmas party? No way! Maximum sentence here. Jail time. You have no choice. Wanna cheat on your wife? No, no, no and no. There’s a law against that too.

Oops. OMG! You just had a wet dream. That’s a $10,000 fine and a year in the slammer. “Baby killer!” Plus some pro-life fanatic might shoot at you too.

Make up your own examples here. Have fun with it.

How about that we make laws demanding that boys should be taught from birth onwards that their whole duty in life is to propagate the race — nothing else. Let’s keep ‘em barefoot sperm banks and chained to the kitchen. Let’s stop giving the males of our species any choice at all, especially their right to make decisions regarding their own reproductive organs — which they clearly can’t manage to keep inside their pants without stern legislative help.

Turnabout is fair play.

Male lawmakers all over America have certainly had fun taking away American women’s right to choose lately, and some of the bizarre things that they have come up with so far have just got to be jokes http://crooksandliars.com/juanita-jean/texas-senate-removes-tampons-mass-des. Reality itself these days has become so weird and far-fetched that even Andy Borowitz’s recent satire on this subject might actually really become yet another facet of male lawmakers’ current Taliban-like right to choose what women can or cannot do with their own bodies. http://www.newyorker.com/online/blogs/borowitzreport/2013/07/texas-weighs-ban-on-women.html?mbid=nl_Borowitz%20%28149%29

Then there’s the fact that over 10,000 men show up at the ER each year because an erectile dysfunction drug like Viagra has given them an unrelenting stiffie. Each of their ER visits costs these guys approximately $1,778. According to NBC News, “In all, the mean annual charge for episodes that began as an E.R. visit for priapism was $123,860,432.” http://www.nbcnews.com/health/long-lasting-painful-erections-send-10-000-men-er-each-6C10620067 So shouldn’t we be passing laws that make use of Viagra illegal too? For wasting all that good sperm?

But how about that we pass another new law instead, one that will finally make sense? How about passing a new law that says only women are qualified to make any and all laws regarding their own reproductive freedom.

No men allowed.

PS: About three years ago, I looked in the mirror and said, “OMG, I look old — what can you do with OLD?” That’s obvious. I should become an actress!

Since that time, I have played all kinds of older women in approximately 60 student films — kindly grandmothers, women dying of cancer, judges, burka-wearing Afghan ladies, the devil’s minion, business executives, homeless women, doctors, society matrons, aging sluts.

Last Saturday I played a drunken barfly in a honky-tonk saloon at a morning shoot, and then an aging whore in 1850 San Francisco in the afternoon (and they paid me in pizza).

“So, Jane, what’s your point?” My point is that there are all kinds of women out there — just like there are all kinds of men. And almost all of us are totally capable of making our own freaking decisions regarding our own reproductive organs. It’s time for our leaders to go legislate on more important stuff (such as putting Wall Street criminals and War Street weapons profiteers in jail for criminal destruction of life after birth) and leave our individual reproductive choices alone.

Oakland: Politicians tried to tear out its heart but the city lives on!

I’m currently reading Michael Chabon’s latest best-seller, “Telegraph Avenue,” wherein he describes how the construction of the humongous Grove-Shafter freeway back in the 1960s destroyed enormously huge chunks of both north Oakland and Oakland’s downtown. I just drove along parts of that freeway this morning and, OMG, was Chabon ever right! http://www.newyorker.com/online/blogs/books/2012/09/michael-chabons-oakland-in-telegraph-avenue.html

The Grove-Shafter freeway, at the time of its construction, was the largest freeway interchange in the world by far — carved right out of the very heart and soul of the City of Oakland. It was humongous. Miles and miles and miles and miles of it — and it’s almost a half-mile high in some parts too. Dominating everything. And this monster freeway that can almost be seen from the moon has been slammed right down into the middle of an extremely densely populated city.

“But, Jane,” you might ask, “what became of all the people who used to live in all those houses that were destroyed and who worked in all those destroyed businesses?” Over 8,000 homes and local businesses were destroyed. “And how did the city ever recover from that, the most high-handed use of eminent domain ever?” you might ask next. It didn’t. The knife of the cruel Grove-Shafter freeway still slices through the heart of Oakland today.

It’s almost like the city’s politicians planned it on purpose, to destroy Oakland’s affordable housing sector and strong working class. “What’s more important, really?” they probably asked themselves, “the lives and hopes of the citizens of Oakland — or getting commuters to San Francisco from Walnut Creek faster?” The answer here is obvious.

And then, according to 2012 Oakland mayoral candidate Arnie Fields, Jerry Brown stepped up to the plate next.

“I want a people-friendly city,” Brown happily declared during his many “We the People” campaign stump speeches for mayor back in 1998. And yet somehow Brown. after being elected on this people-friendly platform, still managed to increase property taxes and assessments (even despite Proposition 13) in working-class West Oakland residents and to run a disastrously huge “blight-removal” campaign there.

And the next thing you knew, retirees in West Oakland who had owned their homes outright for years or working-class heroes who paid their mortgages on time were suddenly being forced into foreclosure because they couldn’t afford to come up with an additional $15,000 or more in taxes on the spur of the moment; or because suddenly their homes (but not homes in the same condition in the more yuppie parts of Oakland) were being condemned for “blight”.

Bye-bye West Oakland. Hello developers and condos. And it didn’t even take a freeway to knock all those houses down.

But still the City of Oakland held on.

And then along came Occupy Oakland in 2011 — and a pro-corporatist police riot was staged that cost Oakland taxpayers approximately three million dollars http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2013/jul/03/occupy-oakland-protesters-1m-police. So. Where was all this extra money to come from? Perhaps by shutting down even more Oakland schools and dropping the wages of Oakland’s municipal employees? Sounds like a plan.

In 2012, five Oakland schools were closed http://saveoaklandschools.org/2012/06/20/school-closures-by-the-numbers/

And now the City of Oakland just had a one-day strike by its municipal employees, who have been faced with even more economic concessions to the City — none of which are in their favor. Municipal employees have suffered many benefit-package take-aways in the past few years — but have been given absolutely no new perqs. Watch this SEIU video for proof: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6hl6g5nzMw0

But still the people of Oakland hang in there (and please always remember that, in the end, it is only the people themselves who can actually turn a city into a City). And the people of Oakland still have flash and charm too! And there is still a THERE over there in Oakland — despite all its politicians’ herculean efforts to tear out its heart and soul.

PS: And there still is a Chez Panisse here in Berkeley as well, even after a disastrous fire at the restaurant last March destroyed much of its dining area http://jpstillwater.blogspot.com/2013/06/just-in-time-for-my-birthday-chez.html. I just went there for my birthday. We had apricot ice cream, salmon and squid salad. The squid salad was actually quite good. And the newly-rebuilt place looks just like the old place — except that all the wood and brass are more shiny.

PPS: And speaking of politicians, I just got one of those “What to do about Congress” chain-letter emails, demanding that all congressional representatives receive the same health plans, pension plans, working conditions, etc. that the rest of us do. Sure, why not.

And perhaps we should also demand that our congressional representatives stop getting the same tax breaks that they give to large corporations http://topics.bloomberg.com/the-great-corporate-tax-dodge/ and start getting the same (lack of) tax breaks that the rest of us (don’t) get instead http://forgiveourtaxes.com/

And we also need to pass a Constitutional amendment that our senators and representatives can only be allowed to spend the same amount of money on their election campaigns as the amount of money that average voter in their district earns in a year.

PPPPS: I bet you anything that Edward Snowden could find asylum in Oakland http://www.motherjones.com//kevin-drum/2013/07/nyt-snowden-was-hacker-nsa! That’s how Oakland rolls. People there don’t take any shite. Not any more. They’ve already been through enough.

And if Snowden isn’t happy in Oakland (which has Yoshi’s, the Oakland Athletics, Harborside, Lake Merritt and Fairyland for crissake — how could he not be!), then he’s more than welcome to come seek asylum with me. But, warning, if he does that, he might have to babysit my granddaughter Mena, the Hugging Saint of Berkeley http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mai33Z5CQn8. I’m just sayin’. I’d trust him with that.

If Snowden had been alive back in 1776, he definitely would have signed the Declaration of Independence. Hope he had a nice Fourth of July stuck in the Moscow airport alongside of Thomas Jefferson and John Hancock.

Oops, I just tried to post this article on my blog and got a message that read, “Invalid Security Token”. What the freak does that mean? That the NSA doesn’t like Oakland either?

Manning, Snowden, Egypt and the 1776 Declaration of Independence

“Edward Snowden must be caught and punished at any cost.” Who said that? Was it some overbearing British sovereign back in 1776 who said it? Had Edward Snowden just signed the American colonies’ famous Declaration of Independence? The way that Snowden has been hounded and pursued and intimidated in the last few weeks, one would certainly think so.

According to an essay entitled “The Price They Paid,” signers of the original Declaration of Independence of 1776 were also hounded, imprisoned and even tortured and killed because they stood up for their beliefs http://www.snopes.com/history/american/pricepaid.asp.

And here we are now, 237 years later, out celebrating the Fourth of July like it actually meant something — while true patriots like Edward Snowden are being hunted down like dogs on the highway by the FBI, the CIA and the NSA. And nobody here seems to either notice or care.

And ditto for Bradley Manning.

According to a recent article by Paul Rogers on current revolts in Egypt, Brazil, Tunisia, Turkey, etc., “The sheer unpredictability of mass protest [is] a matter of great concern to political elites and their security cohorts across the world. That really is deeply worrying for them, and something that will cause them to double their efforts to track what is happening and predict its evolution — an effort no doubt aided by the use of PRISM and the other forms of mass surveillance. What, though, if even those systems don’t have a proper handle on what is happening [or can actually keep a lid on it either]? That will give political elites sleepless nights in the weeks and months to come.” http://www.opendemocracy.net/paul-rogers/egypt-and-worlds-revolt

First comes Occupy Wall Street. Then comes the Arab Spring. And then Wikileaks, Edward Snowden, Julian Assange and Bradley Manning, not necessary in that order. Like in the spring of 1776, popular revolts against economic tyranny seem to be popping up all over like wack-a-moles. No wonder George III was afraid.

“So what’s your point, Jane,” you might ask. Hmmm. I guess my point is that working class people, little people, the salt of the earth people like you and me are making our current economic ruling classes just a tiny bit wary on this Fourth of July weekend of 2013.

But they still haven’t started to get pee-your-pants afraid quite yet. They still have armies and police and the NSA and even the NRA. And trillions of dollars stashed away in the Caymans and penthouses on Wall Street and Michelin-starred restaurants to eat at. “What me worry?” Not quite yet.

But they are worried enough — that the salt of the earth might someday finally get tired of being used, trod on and taken advantage of while they continue to be corporate welfare queens — that they are out there stalking Edward Snowden and torturing Bradley Manning and fretting about what is happening in Egypt and Brazil and Turkey.

But the economic elite almost certainly know that the little people here in America will never get uppity because they know that most Americans are under their thumb; out celebrating the Fourth of July by watching fireworks displays on TV, drinking Cokes and going shopping at dollar stores.

PS: I myself am celebrating Independence Day by going down to the Berkeley marina and watching the fireworks in person — and by reading Keith Richards’ autobiography, “Life.” Now there is a true revolutionary! Of course. But he is also someone who has worked really hard all his life and cared about his work deeply. Richards must have spent about a gazillion hours studying music.

True (and successful) revolutions like Richards’ require sacrifice, thoughtfulness, talent, courage, compassion and a whole bunch of work — but perhaps not quite so many drugs.

Cheney in Hell: Making friends with dead folks

I’m sick and tired of being around alive people. They are just a whole bunch of work. From now on, I’m only going to have Dead People for friends. Do you know how many dead homo sapiens there are in existence right now? 117 billion dead people http://www.livescience.com/18336-human-population-dead-living-infographic.html That certainly offers up a big new bunch of “friending” possibilities to chose from! How does one go about contacting the dead? I’d love to know.

A friend of mine just sent me a list of the top five countries that are super-hard to get extradited from. I just hope that Edward Snowden can get to one of these countries alive — so that I won’t have to list him as one of my new dead BFFs too.

One of the countries that was listed is Dubai. That certainly explains why Dick Cheney moved Halliburton there http://tv.msnbc.com/2013/06/21/the-border-surge-christmas-comes-early-for-halliburton/. But maybe Cheney should have moved his business to Hell instead. There’s positively no extradition from Hell! Plus then Halliburton would be there waiting for him when he finally gets there himself.

“Cheney, what were you THINKING when you bombed Iraq!”

I really really want to learn how to communicate with the dead. Who wouldn’t just love to interview J. Edgar Hoover for instance — on his opinion of the NSA. The man surely would be in ecstasy over the kinds of things that the NSA can now do. But how the freak does one talk to someone in Hell? Would that be the ultimate fireside chat or what!

“But, Jane,” you might say, “anyone can talk to the dead. All you have to do is just open your mouth and let words come out.” And therein lies the hard part. How can you manage to get the dead to talk back?

PS: After attending the recent Netroots Nation convention in San Jose http://www.netrootsnation.org/nn13-keynote-panel-archive/, I went on a tour of local Dead Folks on my drive back to Berkeley — starting with the world-famous Rosicrucian Museum. Boy do they have a lot of mummies and such. Dead guys galore. I was clearly among friends.

Next came the Winchester Mystery House, which is supposed to be haunted. But no ghosts talked to me there either. Snubbed. Guess Sarah Winchester is a Mean Girl at heart.

After that I stopped by Skylawn cemetery, to have a nice cozy chat with my pop and my mom. I always sit by their graves and tell them all the latest hot gossip about my life when I go there. But, unfortunately, not even Mom and Pop were able to talk back.

Ye Olde Scribe Presents: Where’s Waldo Snowden?

Filed under: Uncategorized — Ye Olde Scribe @ 2:32 pm

MartinHandfordWally&Friends

Back before Waldo became a hunted corporatocracy pariah .

Is Waldo Snowden in China?

NO, that’s not Waldo, Waldo Watchers. That’s Wilma! Wilma, wife of union member Fred Flintstone who was fired for striking by Mr. Slate of Koch-Rock Industries, whored herself out to try to save Fred’s job. Since then she has been slaving away in a locked rock sorting factory that burned down. Since no doors would open she is assumed to be dead.

Of course the factory was heavily insured so Fred’s loss was Koch’s gain. Mr. Slate and Koch have managed to make the residents of Bedrock think it’s all the fault of “those damn all powerful unions.” You know: the few unions that are left, and keep compromising to hold on to jobs?

Is Waldo Snowden in Cuba?

No, that’s Woof: Waldo’s dog. Of course because there’s been a blockade of Cuba since they’re not mega- corporate friendly we’re not sure he’s there. All that we see is his tail.

They have to eat something.

Where’s Waldo Snowden?

The fascists who hired him really want to know. You see he brought to the attention of the world that two administrations cared so much for America’s safety they privatized our national security: hiring unsecure companies to kill anyone they wished during events like Katrina, build death showers for our soldiers during wars, provide little water and bad food and, in Waldo’s case, pour over the private phones calls and other communications of private citizens.

Of course they NEVER, EVER would betray their country and sell, or trade or give away such to our enemies for profit, would they?

Would they?

Would they?

Do you know where Waldo Snowden is? If you do please call 1-800-corpshill.

Don’t worry.

We won’t monitor that phone call.

Really.

Trust us.

    Scribe’s Final Word

This edition of Scribe has been brought to you by Wally World. Did you know Waldo is known as “Wally” in England? Scribe didn’t. Scribe means, really, “Wally?” England? Does he have bad teeth; eat steak and kidney pie, drink warm, almost flat, beer? Does he go to the pub and fight off zombies? Is his trunk called a “boot” and his hood a “bonnet?” Does he find English maids sexy? Have sex with bulldogs, or did Winston mean something else when he kept saying “Bully!!!” Does he have big bollocks? When he was a cartoon: well he’s kind of a “cartoon” now, but you know what Scribe means, how come that cartoon wasn’t more like those LSD-driven toons the Beatles had drawn of themselves? Was it because he’s having enough problems trying not to be found and he doesn’t need another bad TRIP?

Can someone go ask him, or does Scribe have to keep asking questions?

What a NERVE: Spy agency accuses Snowden of spying (& my next NN report)

I swear, folks, that I’m not making any of this stuff up.

An American spy agency that currently has all of its greedy tentacles tightly wrapped all around every single household in the entire world — and not in a good way — has just accused EDWARD SNOWDEN of being a spy. How ironic is that!

And I’m still attending the Netroots Nation convention in San Jose, where we are currently learning about even more and better government and corporate ironies.

For instance, Rep. Mike Honda just spoke about how he himself was born in an American concentration camp for immigrants — but never even dreamed that concentration camps for immigrants would once again happen here in the “Land of the Free”.

Isn’t having the NSA tapping all our telephone lines making us “free” enough already? Apparently not.

Next I went to a symposium on immigrants’ rights. Apparently a comprehensive immigration bill is not being passed in Congress right now, but it should be. But then the growers and packers who currently exploit and endanger their undocumented slaves will have to deal with having said slaves come out of the shadows and throw them in jail.

Mexico currently trains most of our skilled construction workers. Americans then steal their skills — but still have no shame about bitching that these skilled workers are here? Huh? http://jpstillwater.blogspot.com/2013/03/mexico-americas-on-job-construction.html

And then Rep. Bruce Braley of Iowa told a tear-producing story about how the Maytag plant in his community suddenly closed down and moved off to China. How ironic. Our workers are being fired so that their jobs can be moved to Asian sweatshops so that corporations can pay less taxes and get cheaper labor at a high cost of you and me — yet Edward Snowden is the one that is being accused of being unpatriotic. http://www.netrootsnation.org/nn_events/nn-13/what-we-can-do-to-expose-red-white-and-blue-washing/

Irony is alive and well here at Netroots Nation.

Then there was a free food-truck event here, and then Senator Jeff Merkley and Dolores Huerta and Howard Dean spoke about stuff — mainly about how America today needs to boldly face up to the challenges of today’s America; not to challenges that may have been important to rich people back when Herbert Hoover was first elected president.

Get your head out of the sand, America. Or else climate change, endless war, domination by the greedy, etc. are gonna super-fry your butt as it sticks up there in the air. How ironic will that be.

Senator Barbara Boxer and Rep. Nancy Pelosi spoke next. “Republicans want to shut down the government,” Pelosi said. No they don’t. They want to own the government. And they already do. Another hypocritical irony here.

“I don’t know why Boehner cries all the time. Imagine if I did that!” said Pelosi. That’s ironic too.

And then there was another free lunch. Yay! And after that? Will the NSA accuse me of spying too — for running my blog?

PS: Tomorrow I’m gonna cruise by the Rosicrucian Egyptian Museum on the way home, to look at all their mummies. America, wake up — or you may end up being mummified too.

Bradley Manning, Edward Snowden, Al Gore and others who fight for peace and justice — they are the waves of the future. How ironic is it that all that most Americans are doing right now is learning more and better mummification techniques — and being led by dinosaurs like Anton Scalia, John Boehner, Mitch McConnell, AIPAC and Dick Cheney.

Reporting from NN on unions: How the URSCR, the most powerful union in America, is destroying our country

Here at the Netroots nation convention in San Jose, CA, the presence of various American labor unions are in evidence everywhere.

The National Education Association tells us a sad story about how 300,000 American teachers have been laid off in recent years — ever since No Child Left Behind decided to leave teachers behind too.

The Laborers’ International Union of North America says that they are ready, willing and able to put our country back to work, “rebuilding America’s energy systems, crumbling roads, bridges and transit systems.” Isn’t it time for them to finally start implementing our “Rooftop Revolution” and bring solar power into every home?

The Alliance for American Manufacturing demands the creation of more stuff that is “Made in America” — and I have their key chain to prove it too. “Make corporations pledge to move jobs back to the United States where they belong.” It’s as simple as that.

The SEIU gave a Karaoke party here. I got to sing along with 2 Chainz — and support American workers at the same time.

The unions here at Netroots Nation all represent good people, strong workers and proud Americans, trying to put the American economy back together again.

But there is one union in America that did not come to Netroots Nation.

There is one union in America that is doing everything it can to block our American economy from moving forward.

There is one union in America that goes on strike constantly, for months at a time, even though these strikes severely damage our country.

There is one union in America that bullies and threatens its members to keep them in line.

There is one union in Americ that misappropriates its members funds — and even outright steals them if it thinks it can get away with it.

There is one union in America that is lazy, self-serving, corrupt, inefficient and determined to destroy the very fabric of our country whenever it can.

“What union is that?” you might ask.

It’s the URSCR, of course. The Union of Republican Senators and Congressional Representatives. And Washington DC is their union town.

PS: I’m currently attending a workshop on “Red-White-and-Blue-Washing,” wherein our good American jobs are being all shipped overseas and yet corporations try to make it appear that these jobs are being created at home. NOT.

Thanks again, URSCR.

Netroots Nation opening night: Howard Dean, the Tech Museum & magical thinking

Photos of Dean, etc. are at http://jpstillwater.blogspot.com/2013/06/netroots-nation-opening-night-howard.html

Today, when I drove down to San Jose to attend the opening night of the Netroots Nation bloggers’ convention, you would think that I was getting ready to go off to the moon or something — not just 40 miles away. And when I got down there, all I wanted to do was take a nap — I had jet lag?

But my hotel had a refrigerator so I went off to Trader Joe’s to stock it with kale-cranberry salads and yogurt and tortilla chips.

At 7:30 pm, it was time to go off to the Tech Museum. Howard Dean is going to speak? Really? I love Howard Dean. He’s my favorite. Imagine if he had won in 2004 instead of just having Bush and Diebold steal the election. We would all have single-payer healthcare right now, and one out of nine American bridges wouldn’t be about to fall down because all our money is being spent on bombing Syria, etc. instead.

“When’s Howard Dean gonna speak?” I must have asked at least a hundred people. Lots of shrugs.

“I don’t know.”

“He already spoke!” finally said the 150th person I asked.

“What did he say?”

“I don’t know,” she replied. The Tech Museum has a lousy sound system. But finally I found someone who had heard what Dean said.

“He said, ‘We are the change.’” Really? I coulda said that.

But there sure are a lot of people here at this opening night. Plus there was lots of free food and I got to tour the Tech Museum and get my photo taken in a fake astronaut suit.

PS: How will change for the better ever come? Here’s my latest theory: Magical thinking.

“But, Jane,” you might say, “magical thinking changes nothing.” Yeah it does. Just ask the GOP.

Inside each of our rational adult selves, there appears to be a very small, very scared kid. And the best way to reassure this small, scared little kid is to tell him or her some magical-thinking fairy-tale stories. A little kid can’t tell the difference. A little kid actually thinks that magic works.

So you tell the little kid inside all of us some magical fairy tales. That’s what the GOP does. Big Bad Wolves and ogres and stuff. it’s Fox News’ bread and butter.

Magical thinking.

“We are the change?” Sure. Why not. Progressives could use some magical thinking too.

PPS: Human beings only really thrive when they have problems to solve. So here’s a problem to for us to solve, a Big problem to solve: World peace.

“Once upon a time, there was a little girl with a problem….” Fill in the blanks about how she solved it. Super powers? Magic wands? Or just being the change that we want to be.

Profiles in Courage: Why John F. Kennedy had to die

I have an old car. And I love my old car. But its funky old sound system consists of only a tape deck — not even a CD player let alone an iPod axillary port. So now I’m forced to play only old-school Books-on-Tape that I check out from the Berkeley Public Library every time I go on a road trip or I even need something to listen to while driving around town. And the BPL can only offer me a limited choice of funky old tapes to listen to — such as Dickens’ “Pickwick Papers” for instance. Or John F. Kennedy’s “Profiles in Courage”.

Remember when we used to be forced to read “Profiles in Courage” back in high school? Yeah, sure. But who the freak can even actually remember what JFK actually said. However, what JFK actually did say in this book is totally shocking. Why? Because it could have been written today — in today’s world, about today’s problems. And it also gives us a way to solve them.

How do you solve the problems of America today? According to JFK, it’s easy. You just show a little moral courage, exhibit a little moral backbone. Like, for instance, the moral courage exhibited by Kennedy himself. John F. Kennedy stood up to the military-industrial complex — because he thought it was the morally right thing to do.

And Kennedy died for his beliefs.

Who killed JFK? We may never know exactly who pulled the trigger or arranged the actual assassination (I myself favor the Pappy Bush theory), but we do know one thing for sure: Whoever did this evil deed has a “Profile in Cowardliness”. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1lSKu1WkA6U

I got so entranced by listening to Kennedy’s words on tape (read by his son John-John, by the way) that I went back to the BPL to check out the actual physical book itself. And guess what? This amazing book, one of the most important and relevant books to be read in the 21st century so far, could only be found in the children’s section of the main branch.

Kennedy wrote about eight U.S. Senatorial heroes who, at great cost to themselves, put America’s interests above their own, especially in times when other Senators were consistently only looking out for their own petty self-interests — and the interests of those lobbyists who had bribed them into corruption.

Senator Daniel Webster, for instance, “was not a Massachusetts man but an American,” who fought like a wildcat to preserve the sanctity of the Union. Imagine how Senator Webster would have reacted today if he had read the following article in “The Voltaire Network” entitled, “Kennedy, the Lobby and the Bomb,” regarding how AIPAC had spent billions of dollars buying members of the Senate to vote in Israel’s (not America’s) best interests.

If Daniel Webster was on the floor of the U.S. Senate today, you bet that America wouldn’t be dealing with the trillion-dollar-plus aftermath of the nuclear arms race in the Middle East that we have been facing since Kennedy was assassinated shortly after telling Israel prime minister David Ben-Gurion that getting The Bomb was a no-no.

“While all NATO member states and countries of the communist bloc were following the example of the USA and the USSR and taking a first step towards nuclear disarmament, Israel was acting secretly on its own, and Kennedy was determined to prevent it [and told Ben-Gurion of this intention in June of 1963 too]. Kennedy’s death a few months later eased the pressure on Israel. Johnson chose to turn a blind eye on the activities at Dimona.” http://www.voltairenet.org/article178401.html

Johnson also turned a blind eye to the brutal strafing and bombing of the USS Liberty in 1967 by Israeli fighter jets, wherein 34 American soldiers were deliberately butchered http://www.gtr5.com/

Webster would definitely have stood up to the Israel lobby.

In “Profiles in Courage,” JFK also wrote about brave Senator Edmund G. Ross, who was soundly defamed by his colleagues for not letting corporate scallywags sack and plunder the post-bellum South. And today, Ross would surely never have voted to give Monsanto a license to plunder America’s farm and food industries like our current cowardly bought-and-paid-for Congress just did http://thinkprogress.org/health/2013/04/10/1832621/monsanto-protection-act-power/.

Another example of courage that Kennedy cited in his book was Senator Robert Taft’s protest against the illegality of the Nuremberg trials. “You can’t try someone for crimes ex post facto,” said Taft — or words to that effect. Taft’s highly unpopular stand, however, helped pave the way for the 1949 Geneva Conventions. But his stubborn defense of upholding the Rule of Law in America also cost him his bid for the presidency.

And today? Taft surely would have been horrified by Guantanamo, America’s perverse dark side evil twin of the Nuremberg trials — where Nazis have become us.

And Sam Houston? He became the most despised man in Texas because he opposed his state’s succession from the Union — kind of like when Congresswoman Barbara Lee was the only person in the House of Representatives to stand up against America’s stupid and brutal attack on Afghanistan. Or like Senator Paul Wellstone, who mysteriously died in a plane crash shortly after voting to oppose GWB’s evil and avaricious war policies http://www.newyorker.com/online/blogs/borowitzreport/2013/06/nsa-enforces-zero-tolerance-policy-on-conscience.html.

If Sam Houston were alive today, however, Texas would still be despising him because you can bet your boots that old Sam would have also stood up against Bush’s Folly — Bush’s disastrous war on Iraq.

And in the early 1960s, John F. Kennedy also took a brave stand against unnecessary, trumped-up and preemptive war — putting our nation’s interests above those of Wall Street and War Street when he tried to stop the military-industrial complex’s disastrous war on Vietnam.

In October of 1963, Kennedy apparently also questioned the CIA’s expanding role in declaring and conducting foreign wars on their own — especially the show that they had been running in Vietnam. Shortly thereafter, Kennedy was killed.

In the words of current NSA whistle-blower Edward Snowden, “You can’t come forward against the world’s most powerful intelligence agency…. No one can meaningfully oppose them. If they want to get you, they’ll get you in time.” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5yB3n9fu-rM

No wonder John F. Kennedy had to die.

PS: I’ll be attending the annual Netroots Nation convention again this year — if my wonderful old car can make it all the way to San Jose, that is. It will be happening on the weekend of June 20-23. Totally fun, educational and entertaining. Perhaps I’ll see you there. http://www.netrootsnation.org/nn_events/nn-13/liquid-courage-kickoff-party-with-howard-dean/

NSA spying on Verizon phone records is nothing new

Filed under: Uncategorized — Greg in cheeseland @ 11:58 pm

Author’s note:
Here we go again with another “scandal” that should have been uncovered during the Bush administration. Now watch the fascists blame this on Obama…

Excerpt:
The “shocking” revelation that the NSA requested phone records from Verizon is not surprising to anyone who has been watching the rise of the police state that America has become since 9/11. The only thing new is now that a British newspaper published the story, the U.S. media and congress have to acknowledge it very publicly.

Today, lawmakers such as Senate Intelligence Committee Chairman Dianne Feinstein (D-CA), House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH), and Lindsey Graham (R-SC) defended the practice as essential for national security. Others such as Rand Paul (R-KY) and Jeff Merkely (D-OR) called it, respectively, an “astounding assault on the constitution” and an “outrageous breach of Americans’ privacy.”

While Senator Feinstein stated that the practice has been in place since 2009, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) more correctly pointed out that “it’s gone on for some seven years.” Indeed, the legal justification for monitoring the phone calls of U.S. citizens can be traced back to the Patriot Act, which became law on October 26, 2001.

Senators Ron Wyden (D-OR) and Mark Udall (D-CO), both on the Senate Intelligence Committee, said in a March 2012 letter to Attorney General Eric Holder that most Americans would be “stunned to learn the details of how these secret court opinions have interpreted section 215 of the Patriot Act.”

Americans would be even more stunned to learn that Verizon’s approximately 120 million customers are not the only ones being snooped on by government agencies – nearly every American is. And most Americans who rely on print and TV news probably have never heard of fusion centers and exactly what they do at the expense of their tax dollars.

Regarding the recent disclosure of the NSA court order for Verizon customer phone records, Michelle Richardson, legislative counsel for the ACLU, said in a statement:

Now that this unconstitutional surveillance effort has been revealed, the government should end it and disclose its full scope, and Congress should initiate an investigation. This disclosure also highlights the growing gap between the public’s and the government’s understandings of the many sweeping surveillance authorities enacted by Congress.

Like so many post-9/11 surveillance laws passed under the vague guise of “national security,” the policies of the U.S. government violate the civil liberties of ordinary Americans that should be guaranteed by the Bill of Rights and other laws.

The Senate report and the activity of fusion centers makes it clear that these facilities are designed to spy on American citizens, invading their privacy while doing nothing to stop terrorism. The request by the NSA to monitor the phone records of Verizon customers is only one pixel in a part of a much larger picture.

Many of the newly reborn proponents of civil liberties and constitutional rights were silent when those freedoms were being trampled upon as congress was running all over each other to let them be taken away shortly after 9/11. Now, our “news” is filled with “scandals” when the real things that Americans should be concerned about are ex post facto.

This is yet more evidence that America is turning from a democracy or constitutional republic into a corporate fascist state. Just look at the 14 defining characteristics of fascism and decide for yourself.

Just in time for my birthday: Chez Panisse is opening again!!!

Who the freak ever wants to get older? Certainly not me! So about ten years ago, I started searching around for some really hard-core reason to actually want to start looking forward to celebrating my birthday each year. And what could be more exciting and wonderful than having dinner at one of America’s very top restaurants in order to celebrate! So that’s what I did. And now I save up my money all year and then treat myself to dinner at Chez Panisse on my birthday. It’s a great idea.

Now I can actually look forward to getting older (well, sort of).

But there’s just one little fly in the ointment here. Chez Panisse caught on fire last March and the whole front of the building burned down.

Hot to worry, however. I just heard that Chez Panisse will actually be re-opening again soon http://www.mercurynews.com/breaking-news/ci_22894618/berkeleys-chez-panisse-restaurant-aims-mid-june-reopening — and just in time for my birthday! That is, if they ever decide to let me back into the place.

There’s a really good reason why we Muslims try to keep away from drinking alcohol — and therein hangs this tale. On my 70th birthday last year, I bought a bottle of my mother’s favorite brand of cheap vin rosé from the local CVS to take along to the big dinner event, thinking that this would be a great token gesture toward my now-departed mother on my behalf. After all, she did give birth to me, right?

But my kids just kept pouring the stuff into my glass without me noticing and, darn, by the end of the meal, I was totally smashed and completely passed out.

“Would you like me to call 911 for your mother?” asked a courteous and rather concerned waiter.

“Not necessary,” my son-in-law replied. “She’s just drunk.” And then he picked me up, threw my unconscious body over his shoulder and walked out. How humiliating. Thank goodness I can remember nothing!

But will Chez Panisse ever let me back in again to celebrate yet another year of getting older? If I promise to stay on the wagon? Since my next birthday will be coming up in a few weeks, we’ll soon find out.

Last year’s birthday dinner was definitely one that I will never forget (but sincerely hope that Chez Panisse won’t remember).

PS: Dinners at Chez Panisse are expensive, sure, but not anywhere near as expensive as one of those screwed-up Lockheed-Martin F-35 bombers that have already proved to be a complete waste of us taxpayers’ money http://www.nationofchange.org/f-35-failures-pile-1362494605.

I figure that if our so-called leaders had just taken that $84,000,000,000 that they’ve totally wasted on the F-35 so far and spent that money on sending people to Chez Panisse for their birthday dinners instead, then approximately 700,000,000 birthday boys and girls could now be celebrating bigtime at the newly-reopened Chez Panisse — including you, me, and every single other person in the San Francisco Bay Area. “Cheers!”

PPS: And with regard to Homeland Security, which has spent most of its Boston budget allotment for the last several years checking up on Occupy Wall Street and other legitimate American protest groups http://www.truth-out.org/news/item/16446-the-wrong-men-how-the-dhs-failed-to-prevent-terrorism instead of following known leads on known terrorists? Imagine how many more people could have eaten their birthday dinners at Chez Panisse with that wasted money too?

Homeland Security apparently spent billions in Boston investigating Occupy Wall Street movements in Bean Town. How much have they spent? Let’s say three billion. That would have been 2,500,000 happy diners celebrating their birthdays at you-know-where instead of so many people in Boston injured or killed because DHS didn’t do its job.

Three billion dollars is enough for every man, woman and child in Berkeley to celebrate their birthdays at Chez Panisse 21.9 times — or else for everybody in downtown Boston to eat there, including airfare here and back.

Ye Olde Scribe’s TV PSA Plea

Fade into pitiful pictures of puppies, dogs and cats at the pound before taking the “long” walk. Sarah McLachlan sings with extra drippy, tear encouraging, violins backing her up.

Voiceover Goon attempting to force you to tears says: It’s the end of a life of fun, frolicking. A long walk to that all too serious, final, frightening destination: the death of comedy. Soon to be almost as unfunny as Dennis Miller. Almost. Could ANYTHING be less funny than Dennis Miller: comedy killer, except maybe Lush Dimbulb?

Anyone ever notice in many of these dystopian movies that while society has fallen apart they always have plenty of vehicles that work almost without fail, and plenty of gas? Who’s refining it? Who’s getting it out of the ground? Who is exploring for more, and where do they find all the working equipment to do that?

The one thing that could absolutely bring society to it’s knees, quickly, unless we seek other means of “fueling” society is somehow, magically, always available? The one thing that, done poorly, really could, and might, bring on a dystopian world is “no problem?”

What’s up with all that?

Maybe, in part, because they are written, and feature actors, who are well known right wingers? Who are

Taxation without Representation: A tale of two Tea Parties

Filed under: Uncategorized — Tags: — Jane Stillwater @ 2:16 pm

In 1773, a bunch of colonial patriots in Boston got totally pissed off at King George because they were being taxed severely by Britain and yet had no say in the matter. “No taxation without representation!” these brave American colonials cried. And then they dumped several bales of English breakfast tea into the Boston harbor. And the rest is history.

“No taxation without representation,” American patriots cried way back then. And now let’s fast-forward approximately 300 years ahead — to see how far we have fallen. There is another Tea Party in America now but these new modern Tea Party guys are currently doing the exact opposite of what the 1773 Tea Party guys did. This new Tea Party is now fighting as hard as it possibly can to get patriotic Americans taxed up the ying-yang instead — but with NO representation.

“But wait a minute,” you might say. “The new Tea Party does have representation. A whole bunch of its members are currently in Congress — and even the President and the Supreme Court seem to obey their every command.” Yeah, but. As the British used to say, “The proof of the pudding is in the eating.” And if you look closely at all those silver-tongued government “servants” in Washington who now swear all up and down that they are conscientiously representing the hopes and fears of this new 21st-century Tea Party? Well. Then. How come in real life these supposedly-loyal TP representatives actually always seem to be doing the bidding of Wall Street and War Street and huge greedy corporations instead.

Americans today are certainly being taxed and taxed and taxed all right — but not by any officials who actually represent their best interests. Clearly, policy-makers in Washington right now are not representing the new Tea Party’s interests — and they are certainly not representing your interests. Or mine either.

Unlike the brave Tea Party of 1773, our 21st-century Tea Party has been hood-winked.

According to www.salary.com, the average Washington lobbyist is getting paid over $100,000 a year to happily whisper sweet nothings into the willing ears of government officials in Washington — so that said lobbyist’s employer will get all kinds of tax breaks and perqs. And of course these government officials in Washington then go out of their way to represent only the folks with big bucks, not people like you and me or even the new Tea Party members — and especially not the new Tea Party rank and file.

Are you currently paying your very own lobbyist $100,000 a year to represent you in Washington? If not, then you clearly have no representation.

And mega-corporate road-hogs such as the Koch brothers and Americans for Prosperity spend how much on buying their representation in Washington? According to Mother Jones Magazine http://www.motherjones.com/politics/2012/11/charts-map-koch-brothers-2012-spending, just these two groups alone paid out 96.7 million dollars in campaign contributions during the elections of 2012. And did you also pay out 96.7 million dollars as well, to get your representative elected? No? Then your representative owes you diddly. Sorry, but that’s how it goes.

If We-the-People actually did have any representation in Washington, America would certainly not be in the hot mess that it is in now. We would all have good schools, a solid infrastructure and lots of housing and jobs, and with no outsourcing, no wars-for-profit, no bankster dirty tricks, no super-fund tax breaks for the wealthy 1% — and definitely no more “trickle up”.

If modern-day Americans had only still managed to maintain that feisty American historical spirit of “No taxation without representation!” that our brave ancestors fought so hard for, then Monsanto and the nuclear industry and Big Pharma and oil barons http://tinyurl.com/oz8jqyw and banksters and Citizens United and the Koch brothers and Wall Street and War Street would not be running our government and owning it like they do. WE would be running it and owning it.

But now here we are instead — approximately 300 years after the original Tea Party heroes did their bit to bring us freedom from taxation without representation — and most Americans still haven’t learned a single thing since King George was our boss. Not one single thing.
