Bush Administration Acts to Limit Existing Health Plans for America’s Children

Filed under: Opinion — Volt @ 10:26 am

Robert Pear, The New York Times, August 20, 2007

The Bush administration, continuing its fight to stop states from expanding the popular Children’s Health Insurance Program, has adopted new standards that would make it much more difficult for New York, California and others to extend coverage to children in middle-income families.

Administration officials outlined the new standards in a letter sent to state health officials on Friday evening, in the middle of a month-long Congressional recess. In interviews, they said the changes were aimed at returning the Children’s Health Insurance Program to its original focus on low-income children and to make sure the program did not become a substitute for private health coverage.

After learning of the new policy, some state officials said today that it could cripple their efforts to cover more children by imposing standards that could not be met.

Ann Clemency Kohler, deputy commissioner of human services in New Jersey, said: “We are horrified at the new federal policy. It will cause havoc with our program and could jeopardize coverage for thousands of children.”

Stan Rosenstein, the Medicaid director in California, said the federal policy was “highly restrictive, much more restrictive than what we want to do.”

The poverty level for a family of four is $20,650 in annual income. New York now covers children in families with income up to 250 percent of the poverty level. The State Legislature has passed a bill that would raise the limit to 400 percent of the poverty level — $82,600 for a family of four — but the change is subject to federal approval.

Thompson breaking election laws?

Filed under: Uncategorized — Bart @ 8:35 am

A liberal blogger has filed a federal complaint against former Sen. Fred Thompson, accusing him of violating election laws as he ponders his entry into the race.

The blogger, Lane Hudson, submitted his complaint to the FEC on Monday saying Thompson has raised far more money than he needs to explore whether to run for president.

Federal law allows potential candidates to raise money to travel, conduct polls and pay for other expenses related to “testing the waters” for a political campaign. During that exploratory period, a potential candidate does not have to file financial reports.

Thompson has been hiring staff, opening a headquarters, holding fundraisers and promoting his credentials as a potential White House contender. But he has not said definitively that he’s a candidate for president. He is expected to make an announcement around Labor Day.

Bart says: I remember when he was going to announce on July 4th, too.
Like the rest of the GOP losers, I don’t think Thompson has a chance.
He’s too old and too stupid and he can’t think on his feet.

“If I was running for president, I’d call up the other guy and say let’s have a debate. No moderator. No questioners. We’ll get a studio. Two chairs. You come in one door, and I’ll come in the other. We’ll sit down in the center and have a conversation, and we’ll debate the issues. The only other people in the room would be the cameramen, and they will take the pictures. We’ll sit there for two hours just like two guys in the waiting room at the airport. And when it’s over the audience will have to decide who should be the president. That’s a debate.”

Mailbag – The Rats Cash In

Filed under: Uncategorized — Bart @ 8:10 am

The rats are not only leaving the Monkey in the Executive branch. In the
House, Deborah Pryce (R-OH) announced yesterday that she would not seek
reelection and former speaker Dennis Hastert is expected to announced
that he won’t seek reelection either and another G.O.P. leader,
Representative Ray LaHood, also of Illinois, decided earlier this summer
that he would retire from Congress.

No one really believes that they either are going home and sitting on the
sidelines or are just tired of the shabby treatment they get from the
Dems that they used to delight in dishing out when they were in the
majority. They, being true whores, are cashing in and going to some high
paying job they’ve earned for their favors and submission to corporate
America.

Tony Snow is a prime example. He says he can’t make it on $168k and is
expected to leave the Bush Propaganda Team soon. Poor bastard! He and his
fascist party have no idea as to how most of America struggles every day.
Wonder on whose payroll he will wind up on? The Republican dropouts may
follow the example of my own state’s new ex senator, Rick Santorum who
pads his resume and paycheck some more with a job at a law firm. When he
didn’t do one job right, now Man-on-Dog has three.

Looks like the repugs cannot stand the truth getting out, the lousy (?)
pay and/or being in the minority. What a shock! I thought these
representatives who allegedly possess higher morals and character would
want to stay fight for their principles and fight their dreaded liberal
“enemy.” How many more will hang it up?

Did you know there was a Dem. debate Sunday?

Filed under: Uncategorized — Bart @ 8:07 am

I didn’t, and I keep up with this stuff more than most Americans.

Who’s in charge of publicity for these debates?
I assume Jon Stewart was kidding, but he said there have been 37 so far.
The same ten people give the same answers to the same questions.

Isn’t it time to drop candidates with less than 10% approval?
I know Kucinich and Gravel are fun to watch, but this isn’t about fun.

Why don’t we get Hillary, Obama, Edwards and Richardson together
and let them argue for, say, 3 debates, then we’ll drop one of the four.
Same the the Repubs – why have ten people on the stage? It’s crazy!

Still no word on my computer – maybe I’ll have it back today?

Healthwise, I’ve coughed and coughed until my lungs are sore.
I got a “Z Pack” of anti-biotics from my religiously insane doctor.
That has to help, right?

Damn, had to cough again.
My lungs feel like they’re itching – I hate that.

Foreclosure filings surged 93 percent over the same period last year, with Nevada, Georgia and Michigan accounting for the highest foreclosure rates nationwide.

The figures are the latest measure of the ailing housing market, which has seen defaults and foreclosures soar as financially strapped borrowers have failed to make payments or find buyers.

In all, 179,599 foreclosure filings were reported during July, up from 92,845 in the year-ago month, according to Irvine-based RealtyTrac Inc.

Bastard Rove, AKA Bush’s brains, complained that Democrats were Captain Ahabs relentlessly pursuing him as the big white whale.

“Let’s face it, I mean, I’m a myth,” Mr. Rove told Chris Wallace on “Fox Whore Sunday” when asked about his critics. “You know, I’m Beowulf, you know, I’m Grendel. I don’t know who I am. But they’re after me.”

Asked if he felt responsible for the slide of the GOP. “Well, look, everyone who identifies with the GOP ought to, ought to, ought to feel some responsibility,” he replied.

Obama: Ease the Cuba Embargo

Barack Obama is leaping into the long-running Cuba debate by calling for the U.S. to ease restrictions for Cuban-Americans who want to visit the island or send money home.

Obama’s campaign said Monday that, if elected, the Illinois senator would lift restrictions imposed by the Bush administration and allow Cuban-Americans to visit their relatives more frequently, as well as ease limits on the amount of money they can send to their families.

”Senator Obama feels that the Bush administration has made a humanitarian and a strategic blunder,” spokeswoman Jen Psaki said in an e-mail. ”His concern is that this has had a profoundly negative impact on the Cuban people, making them more dependent on the Castro regime, thus isolating them from the transformative message carried by Cuban-Americans.”

Bart says: Why not drop the stupid embargo altogether?
What do we gain by punishing the Cuban people?
Let’s open the gates and flood them with capitalism – that’ll teach ‘em.

Crooked Catholics in Cleveland

A former assistant treasurer of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Cleveland is to go on trial Monday, accused of taking part in widespread financial mismanagement and looting of church funds.

Lawyers for the defendants in this trial and a related case, however, say top church officials are to blame; in documents filed in federal court, the lawyers say the diocese’s former bishop and a priest used secret accounts to embezzle millions of dollars from the diocese. Such accusations are “scurrilous,” the diocese has said in a written statement.

Bart says: Oh well, as far as serious crimes go, stealing is better than child rape.

Leahy making more empty threats

“I prefer cooperation to contempt, but right now, there’s no question they’re in contempt of a valid order of the Congress,” Mr. Leahy said.

No, senator, you believe in words instead of action.

Senator, stop making useless threats and f-ing DO SOMETHING!

This White House has already told you to “Go fuck yourself,”
so why do you think your silly, empty threats scare them?

I’m surprised you have time to threaten anyone with your very important Batman movie coming up – are you sure you have time to save the country between takes?

We’re in trouble if we expect Senator Rubberstamp to save us.

Iraqi Governor Assassinated

An Iraqi provincial governor was assassinated by a roadside bomb on Monday in an attack that officials said was a result of an internal power struggle with rival Shiite militias, rather than sectarian violence.

The governor, Mohammed Ali al-Hassani of the southern Muthanna Province, was a member of the Supreme Islamic Iraqi Council, one of the major Shiite parties. He is the second governor from the powerful party to be killed within 10 days, opening up the prospect of escalating violence among Shiites.

Mr. Hassani had left his house in Rumaitha and was heading to the nearby provincial capital, Samawa, 230 miles south of Baghdad, when his convoy was hit by a powerful bomb, killing him, a driver and a guard, said the police.

Although no one blamed any single group for the bombing, Mr. Hassani has in recent months been vocal in his criticisms of the Mahdi Army militia, which is loyal to Moktada al-Sadr,
