I notice that the pdf shows Perkel’s name alongside his Springfield MO business, Computer Tyme, under the heading for Windows 3.1. When Windows was first released, Marc publicly (and rightly) identified it as a programmer-hostile environment. The pretty pictures and bright colors, while ostensibly a nice menu system for the end user, was the first step in making it more difficult for applications designers.
At the time, that was part of Perkel’s business – designing applications and utilities that gave more power to the end user. He also made a point of sharing information instead of hiding it. This, and his outspoken behavior, red-flagged him as an individual who would be unlikely to encourage the people who bought computers and systems from him, to buy Windows 3.1 – so they blacklisted him.
At least, that’s my theory. But you can still find Marc’s comments about early Windows versions on his website if you try. I think everything he’s ever written can be found somewhere on http://www.perkel.com.
