Blackwater USA

On April 30th 1970, president Nixon announced a massive offensive into Cambodia. This sparked massive demonstrations across the country, particularly in college campuses. For some reason the mayor of Kent Ohio, thought Kent State was beyond control and asked the Governor Jim Rhodes (Republican of course), to bring in the National Guard. On May 3rd, the National Guard bayoneted 2 men. This was not enough to convince the governor that maybe this was not such a good idea. On May fourth in a fusillade of 67 shots that lasted 13 seconds, the National Guard killed 4 unarmed students and wounded another 9. This together with the Mai-Lai massacre (1969) galvanized the American public against the war and ultimately ended the war. Of course, not before Nixon was re-elected with his secret plan to end the war. Rhodes was term limited out, but he did become Governor again in 1975 and was then re-elected to serve a total of 8 more years. A grand tribute to our famous short term memory.

Yes Nixon was not directly in charge of the National Guard, but an human being would have resigned. Richard was not human, nor sub-human, more like a rodent. So what does this have to do with today? Good question.

Again we are faced with a delusional maniac in the Presidency, as our Commander in Chief. He does not have control over the National Guard, though he can activate them and send them to Iraq. He is actively searching for a way to expand the war, just like good old Richard, this time into Iran. There are rumors that the military might mutiny and not follow his orders. We can hope that will happen, but they are just rumors. What happens if they don’t and we are faced with the worst of situations an escalating war and domestic disturbance at home? What happens if we all go into the streets and try to put an end to the madness? Well little George has a surprise for us. He does not need the National Guard or the regular military. He has his own private army, Blackwater.

Blackwater is a small private firm owned by a right wing evangelical Republican from Ohio, how convenient. George’s most loyal base. This was a company that before the Iraq war barely existed. They had revenues less than $200,000 a year. Today they are a $200,000,000.00 a year enterprise. Only internet companies at the end of the nineties grew so fast. In effect this company is wholly owned and paid for by the administration. The President has his own private army. Why is nobody ringing all the alarm bells? Well honestly I don’t know, but at least now you know.

Never in the history of the Republic has a President had his own private army. This type of thuggery was reserved for African strongmen, South American Dictators and drug cartels. This is where our Presidency is today. Still proud to be American? How far below third world status can this man take us? Give him time and we will find out.

If we ever have to go into the streets to affect real change, and it’s more likely to happen, than not. Know what awaits us.
