Rush Limbaugh Goes After McCain on the Eve of Super Tuesday

Howard Kurtz, The Washington Post, February 5, 2008

It may be the best sideshow in presidential politics: the nation’s top radio talker trying to take down the Republican front-runner in today’s Super Tuesday showdown.

Rush Limbaugh has been relentless in his criticism of John McCain, prompting suggestions that he may have to soften his stance if the Arizona senator wins the nomination and faces off against Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama. But if that happens, Limbaugh said in an interview over the weekend, he would rather see the Democrats win the White House.

“If I believe the country will suffer with either Hillary, Obama or McCain, I would just as soon the Democrats take the hit . . . rather than a Republican causing the debacle,” he said. “And I would prefer not to have conservative Republicans in the Congress paralyzed by having to support, out of party loyalty, a Republican president who is not conservative.”

When it comes to the McCain mutiny, Limbaugh has plenty of company on the right side of the dial. Laura Ingraham endorsed Mitt Romney last week, saying, “There is no way in hell I could pull the lever for John McCain.” Sean Hannity, who also endorsed the former Massachusetts governor, regularly rips McCain. Hugh Hewitt is urging the audience for his syndicated radio show to fight for Romney against what he calls a media-generated “McCain resurrection.” But with a program heard on 600 stations, including Washington’s WMAL, Limbaugh is the loudest and brashest voice inveighing against the man he derides as “Saint John of Arizona.”

  1. Microvolt,
Your cartoon insinuates that “hate radio” says “How could anyone vote for a Mormon?”
Can’t you put out better than this kind of shit. You are doing the very equivelant of what you object to – hatred.

  2. Grim you need to get out more

Chuck Colson criticized Mormonism as un-Christian. Colson wrote: “Mormonism either affirms historic Christianity, or it doesn’t. Since it doesn’t, it can’t call itself Christianity — a fact that all the good will and public relations in Utah can’t change.”
Shirley Dobson, the wife of Focus on the Family founder and chairman James C. Dobson, barred Mormons from conducting services during the 2004 National Day of Prayer. The Southern Baptist Convention, America’s second-largest religious community after Catholicism, has classified Mormonism as a cult. Further, Pat Robertson’s Christian Broadcasting Network (CBN) has also identified Mormonism as a cult. A 1992 CBN pamphlet — titled “Cults” — reportedly declared:
A cult is any group that has a form of godliness, but does not recognize Jesus Christ as the unique son of God … One test of a cult is that it often does not strictly teach that Jesus is the only begotten Son of God who Himself is God manifested in the flesh … Christian-oriented cults include the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints or Reorganized Church of Latter Day Saints (Mormons), the Worldwide Church of God, Christian Science, Unity, Unitarianism, The Way International, Rosicrucian Society of America, Bahai, Hare Krishna, Scientology, the Unification Church, and the Jehovah’s Witnesses.

Now personaly I don’t care which totem a person prays to as long as they aren’t telling me which totem I have to pray to.

  3. You go Grim, I’ll take it one step further and say the cartoon attempts to undermine consumer confidence in American made radios. My radios never catch fire without deliberate prompting.

Seriously though, I think the radio Republicans are being abandoned by the Republican leadership after their years of loyalty. It looks like they were left out of the loop, maybe to make McCain look more moderate when the country seemed to be leaning left. The Bush administration owes McCain big for whitewashing the Abramhoff investigation.

  4. McCain became chairman of the Senate Indian Affairs Committee as soon as the Abramhoff investigation began in early 2004. He was given access to thousands of confiscated e-mails between lobbyists and congress.

One month later GW was kissing and hugging McCain on the campaign trail.

  5. Grimmy,

Were you under the impression that I drew that cartoon?

I post all kinds of articles and toons.

And, since when is pointing out religious superstition and nonsense “hatred?”

  6. Good point, Danger Bear. Abramoff’s ties touched a lot of GOP VIPs and McCain managed to limit the damage. Now, ol’ ‘Straight Talk’ Cap’n Johnny just lies like a rug about his past history; good thing for him our fawning Big Media loves him and studiously ignores his long line of BS.

I’d also like to know where he got the money to stage his big comeback in NH — The man had fired most of his staff and traveling on the cheap just a month before.

BTW, where in hell can you can find an American-made radio these days?
