As the elections approach and we are almost certain of our candidates, it is time to start asking serious questions. Ok, not of John McCain, because we already know his answer and its pretty much what he tells his Senate colleagues when he disagrees, “Go F***yourself.” But we do need to pressure our candidate and not let him assume he has our vote unless he can convincingly assure us of answers.
Other than healthcare, Iraq, the economy, we need ironclad commitments of a return to Democracy. We all need this, Democrats, Independents and specially Republicans. Maybe if we remind them of what Democracy is they may come to their senses. Keep in mind that since the Fascist contract with America introduced by Newt (My god is that an appropriate name for a snake) Gringrich in 1994 Republicans have not revisited Democracy. They dreamt of a fascist state as far back as 1980 and Newt delivered.
We need to know how we are going to stop:
Torture and rendition.
The naming of even US citizens as enemy combatants without legal recourse.
Our phones, mail and internet from being spied on.
Our ever growing no fly list.
Our computers from being seized at the borders.
How we are going to restore all our civil liberties as stated in our Constitution.
On that note, isn’t it ironic that the only liberty our government feels it cannot infringe on is the right to carry arms? How do we elect these incompetent morons?
We need satisfactory answers to:
How, why and who lied us into Iraq?
What was discussed and who was included in the VPs energy task force?
Who planned, carried out, and executed 9/11?
This includes a long list of questions, least of which is why was NORAD stood down and who are the moles in our government?
Why is Osama Bin laden still alive and free?
Once we get past those, maybe we can reopen the Iran Contra investigation.
The Warren Commission investigation.
The Liberty incident that has never been investigated.
How can we say we live in a Democracy with a transparent government when the majority of the people feel they have been manipulated for the past 60 years and we have no answers to the most relevant episodes in our history? Life changing events that have been glossed over, covered up, and lied about and the people have never been told the truth.
No government is 100% transparent, that would be impossible even in a utopian society. But there is a level of accountability we expect from our government. Maybe El Estupido, is the straw that broke the camel’s back, but we can no longer accept to live in darkness. We must stand up, ask for, and demand transparency of our leaders. If they tried to kill Mossadeq (Iran 1953) or kill Trujillo (Dominican Republic 1961), or many other world leaders to come, maybe we won’t care, maybe it’s not important in our everyday lives. But the above issues are and we must demand answers.
My opinion of the mess the world, including the US, is in, and candidates won’t solve it:
Democracy as we used to know it is built by people of strong principle establishing a set of rules for getting on with each other, something like a constitution.
These people then get together and set up a group, like a government, using these rules, which include mechanisms to ensure the rules apply to everyone.
People choose representatives to carry out the duties laid out in the rules, according to the rules. They ensure (and I mean THEY, the people who vote) that the rules are followed.
Nowadays, the people do not do that last step. I am sure they have their reasons (my representative doesn’t listen to me, etc.), so the elected representatives do what the Interest Groups say – they DO enforce that last step.
And the rules that were set up take the place of the individual who set them up, and are ignored… Rules are nothing if the people who set them up do not make 100% sure they are followed.
The military needs wars or it loses power, and it is in a position to create them
Big business needs unemployemnt or it loses power, and is in a position to create that.
The drug industry needs the sick or it loses power, and is in a position to create that.
Banks need debtors or they lose power, and they are in a position to create that.
Secret Police need terrorist threats or they lose power, and they are in a position to create that.
What do You and I need? At the moment, we do not seem to be in a position to create that. So in whose hands is our democracy?
