John McCain was just kidding about that “no new taxes” pledge

WASHINGTON (AP) — Republican presidential candidate John McCain drew a sharp rebuke Monday from conservatives after he signaled an openness to a higher payroll tax for Social Security, contrary to previous vows not to raise taxes of any kind.
Speaking with reporters on his campaign bus on July 9, he cited a need to shore up Social Security, saying: “I cannot tell you what I would do, except to put everything on the table.”

OW! I’m getting whiplash trying to follow McCain’s shifting positions. Does he even care anymore — maybe he figures no one is paying attention anyway, so what difference does it make what he says. “My friends, I personally won WWII when I assassinated Hitler in his bunker as a boy. I’m going to give every American who votes for me one million dollars and a new car of their choice! Hey, ladies, I fart Chanel No. 5! Vote for me — I’m incredible!”
