Did New York middle-class couple really give $61,600 of their own money to McCain, GOP? Or is it Big-Oil funneling donations?
Wake. Up. People. Who the hell gives $61,600 of their own money to any presidential candidate / political party — the first time EVER donating to a federal campaign — when it’s a crap economy, they’re driving a 15-year-old Chevy Cavalier and live in an apartment in Queens??? Gimme a break. Who’s your daddy McCain?
Despite what appears to be a middle-class lifestyle, the couple has written $61,600 in checks to John McCain’s presidential campaign and the Republican National Committee, most of it within days of McCain’s decision to endorse offshore oil drilling. [snip]
Alice Rocchio, reached at the office, confirmed that she registered her ’93 Chevy in February, but said that she “absolutely” used her own money to make the donations.
Moments later, she asked a reporter: “Are you done with your questions?”
A former FEC official said that it’s possible that the Rocchios had the means to make those hefty contributions — their first reported donations to a federal campaign. But the official, who declined to be identified because of the sensitivity of the matter, said that their donations also could trigger a complaint or otherwise catch the eyes of the agency’s enforcement staff, tasked to ensure that companies or wealthy individuals don’t illegally circumvent contribution limits by using employees or other third parties as “conduits” for cash.
You guessed it, the wife works at Hess — one of the country’s five biggest oil companies — and guess what, they conduct deepwater drilling in the Gulf of Mexico (as well as off the coasts of Europe, Africa and Asia). No kidding.
If ANYONE wonders why this offshore drilling became an instant issue — follow the money.
The donations, first traced by Campaign Money Watch last week, were part of $1.2 million in oil industry contributions to McCain’s Victory ’08 Committee, 73 percent coming after McCain reversed his long-held opposition to offshore oil drilling. The non-partisan watchdog group said oil executives and their spouses from Colorado, Mississippi, Louisiana, California, Indiana, New Jersey and Florida also donated.
Damn well hope this makes the MSM. Where’s the stinky fish in Obama’s campaign?… he just climbed on board the same offshore-drilling ship.http://xuzi.newsvine.com/_news/2008/08/07/1727117-did-new-york-middle-class-couple-really-give-61600-of-their-own-money-to-mccain-gop-or-is-it-big-oil-funneling-donations
I thought this was satire at first: Sure, some couple out of a Neil Simon play driving a piece-of-crap ’93 Cavalier — the only Chevy that makes the Yugo look good — and lives in that millionaire’s haven of Queens, NY, forks over $60,000 to the McCain campaign, because that’s just the pocket change they had left over after buying lottery tickets and eating the Early Bird Special at the Red Lobster that week. And the wife ‘just happens’ to work at Hess Oil. What is this — SNL or Mad TV?
Unfortunately, this travesty is true, and the fact is that there’s no FEC oversight right now, so McCain can pull off these kinds of scams scot-free. He knows his chum-buddies in the Big Media won’t make a stink, just as they said nothing about his violating his pledge to only take public money in the primaries. What a skunk.
